AliExpress Implements VAT Prepayment and Improves Pickup Options for Israeli Shoppers
Chinese e-commerce giant AliExpress is introducing significant changes to its shipping and taxation policies for Israeli consumers, including upfront VAT collection on purchases over $75 and enhanced synchronization of pickup points near customers' homes. Starting immediately, AliExpress will charge VAT at checkout for orders exceeding the tax exemption threshold, replacing the previous system where local shipping companies collected VAT upon delivery. This change, explained by Yaniv Porat, manager of the Alibuy shopping group, aims to eliminate surprise fees and streamline the payment process, similar to Amazon's model.
Additionally, AliExpress has upgraded its delivery service by allowing customers to update their preferred pickup address directly in their account settings. This improvement is designed to better match customers' physical locations with nearby pickup stations, reducing the need for long trips to distant collection points. Porat highlighted that this synchronization will enhance convenience for Israeli shoppers.
Looking ahead, AliExpress anticipates a reduction in shipping costs starting late July and continuing through August, coinciding with a "mega sale" event. The company also reports faster delivery times from China, now averaging one to ten days, partly due to warehouses located in Israel. These developments reinforce AliExpress's position as one of the most popular foreign shopping platforms in Israel, alongside competitors like Temu, SHEIN, Amazon, Next, and iHerb.
For Israeli consumers, the upfront VAT payment accelerates customs clearance and package pickup by removing previous delays caused by payment requests after delivery. However, while VAT is prepaid, additional handling fees charged by private shipping companies in Israel may still apply. The transparent pricing model allows customers to see the full cost of products at checkout, simplifying price comparisons with local retailers. The new ability to specify pickup points is expected to save time and reduce unnecessary travel. Combined with the upcoming shipping discounts and sales, these changes are set to make AliExpress purchases more affordable and convenient for Israeli buyers.
