Diego Forlan Named Uruguay's Interim Coach After World Cup Group Stage Exit

Following Uruguay's disappointing elimination in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup without a single win, the Uruguayan Football Association has appointed former star Diego Forlan as the national team's interim head coach. This decision comes after a player revolt led by captain Federico Valverde against the dismissed coach Marcelo Bielsa, whose tenure was marked by tactical disagreements and controversial squad decisions, including leaving Luis Suarez out of the World Cup roster.

Forlan, who has also taken charge of Uruguay's under-20 team, signed a contract through 2027.
