Boaz Bismuth May Replace Tzachi Braverman as Israel's Ambassador to London Amid Braverman's Legal Troubles
Tzachi Braverman, Israel's appointed ambassador to London, is currently suspended from his post due to ongoing legal proceedings. Braverman's appointment was confirmed in September, but by February he was summoned for a hearing before the Civil Service Commission amid allegations related to the "night meeting" affair. This investigation involves suspicions of obstruction of justice and misuse of sensitive information linked to the Prime Minister's office. Braverman was initially barred from leaving Israel, hindering his ability to assume the ambassadorial role, though this travel ban was lifted shortly after. In May, the State Prosecutor's Office informed Braverman that criminal charges for fraud, breach of trust, and obstruction of justice were being considered, pending a hearing.
The "night meeting" case centers on a clandestine encounter in a parking lot, where Braverman allegedly attempted to influence investigation conditions. Eli Feldstein, who spoke in an interview, claimed Braverman met him that night and shared details about a covert military investigation into leaked classified documents. Braverman reportedly suggested ways to halt the investigation. Following this interview, the Lahav 433 unit launched a criminal probe against Braverman just days before he was to begin his ambassadorial duties.
During the investigation, testimonies were given by several senior officials, including former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, former Military Intelligence head Shlomi Bendel, and incoming Mossad chief David Barnea, as well as Roman Gofman, Netanyahu's former military secretary. Meanwhile, speculation has arisen that Boaz Bismuth, a fellow party member and current chairman of the Finance Committee, may be appointed as the new ambassador to London. Bismuth himself hinted at the possibility, responding to a comment about "packing bags for London" by saying he has been sent to many places worldwide.
Currently, Israel has no permanent ambassador in London due to Braverman's suspension and legal challenges. The Foreign Ministry is expected to decide on a replacement soon, with Bismuth as a leading candidate.
