Palestinian Accused of Large-Scale Smuggling to Gaza Released Without Explanation in West Bank

A Palestinian resident of the Gaza Strip, who has been illegally staying in the West Bank since 2021, was indicted for extensive smuggling activities into Gaza during the recent war, Avishai Greenzaig reported on Sunday. According to the indictment, the suspect used three trucks to smuggle approximately 10,000 mobile phones, half a ton of tobacco, solar panels, and other goods into Gaza. He allegedly earned around one million shekels from these operations.

Following the investigation, the military court charged him and initially ordered his detention until the end of the proceedings, citing his illegal presence in the West Bank and rejecting alternatives to detention. However, after an appeal to the military appeals court, the detention order was overturned. The appeals court ordered his release back to the West Bank without house arrest but required a bail deposit amounting to several hundred thousand shekels.

Notably, the appeals court did not provide any justification for reversing the detention decision, despite the severity of the charges and the claim that the suspect profited significantly from the smuggling. This development has raised concerns given the scale of the alleged smuggling and the lack of detailed reasoning behind the court's ruling.
