Israel Updates Regulations to Allow Import of Electric Off-Road Vehicles

Israel's Ministry of Transport has amended traffic regulations to remove a longstanding barrier preventing the import of electric off-road vehicles. The change, signed by Transport and Road Safety Minister Miri Regev on Sunday, updates the technical definition of "off-road vehicle" by eliminating the previous requirement that such vehicles have an internal combustion engine with an engine capacity of up to 2,000 cc. This criterion, suitable for traditional combustion engines, excluded electric vehicles which do not have engine displacement measurements.

The regulatory update is expected to enable the entry of advanced electric off-road models into the Israeli market for the first time, broadening consumer options and fostering competition and innovation in the automotive sector. The Ministry emphasized that the amendment aligns Israeli regulations with global automotive trends and supports the government's policy to promote clean transportation and reduce air pollution.

While the technical definition has changed, all other licensing, safety, and regulatory standards for off-road vehicles remain in effect. Imported electric off-road vehicles must still comply with existing legal requirements. The Ministry noted that this regulatory adjustment addresses the gap between rapid technological developments in the automotive industry and outdated local regulations, allowing Israel to adopt new technologies more swiftly and offer a wider variety of vehicles to the public.
