Brigadier General Eli David Assumes Role as IDF Chief Engineer Officer
Brigadier General Eli David officially took over as the Chief Engineer Officer of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in a ceremony held last week at the Engineering Corps Memorial in Hulda National Park. He replaces Brigadier General Yoav Torchansky, who concluded his 29-year military career after serving as Chief Engineer Officer for the past two and a half years. The change of command ceremony was led by Major General Nadav Lotan, Commander of the IDF Ground Forces.
In his remarks, Major General Lotan highlighted the heavy toll the Engineering Corps has paid in the current conflict, noting that 721 corps members have fallen since its establishment, including 91 in this war alone. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to support wounded soldiers and their families, calling it a moral and command responsibility. Lotan praised Torchansky for his leadership during the war, adapting the corps to combat needs while planning for the future, and wished him success in his post-military life.
Addressing Brigadier General David, Lotan acknowledged his extensive and varied military background, including command roles in the Yahalom unit, engineering battalions, the 91st Division, and the Northern Command, as well as leading Yahalom during the war. He entrusted David with the responsibility to continue shaping and innovating the Engineering Corps and to nurture its personnel.
In his farewell speech, Torchansky reflected on the dual nature of combat engineering, combining meticulous planning with hands-on fieldwork, and honored the fallen soldiers memorialized behind him. He entrusted David with the corps' legacy, expressing confidence in his ability to lead it to new achievements. Brigadier General David expressed deep respect for the corps' history and the weight of his new role, thanking Torchansky for a professional and selfless handover and wishing him well in retirement.
