Welsh Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75 After Emergency Surgery

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer known for international hits like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," passed away at the age of 75. In May 2026, she was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery due to a bowel perforation. Although she initially showed slight improvement, she died on Wednesday, leaving behind her husband Robert Sullivan, to whom she was married for over 50 years.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales in 1951 to working-class parents, Tyler began her music career after placing second in a talent contest at age 18. She rose to fame in the late 1970s with her debut album "The World Starts Tonight" and singles like "Lost in France" and "More Than a Lover." Her 1977 hit "It's a Heartache" reached number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Her distinctive raspy voice resulted from vocal cord surgery that year, after which she defied medical advice to rest.

In the 1980s, Tyler shifted toward rock music, collaborating with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. He wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart," released in 1983 as the lead single from the album "Faster Than the Speed of Night," which sold over six million copies and topped the UK album charts. Steinman also wrote "Holding Out for a Hero," another major hit. Tyler recorded other notable songs during this period, including "Here She Comes" for the "Metropolis" soundtrack and "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)."

Tyler continued her success in Europe during the 1990s, notably with the song "Bitterblue" produced by Dieter Bohlen. In 2003, she re-recorded "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as a bilingual duet with French singer Kareen Antonn, reaching number one in France. She represented the UK in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with "Believe in Me" from the album "Rocks and Honey." Later albums included "Between the Earth and the Stars" (2019) and "The Best Is Yet to Come" (2021).

Throughout her career, Tyler received three Grammy nominations and three Brit Award nominations, including two for British female solo artist. In 2022, she was honored with an MBE for her contributions to music during the Queen's Birthday celebrations.
