Pioneering Israeli Stage Producer Miriam Etzioni Passes Away at 88
Miriam Etzioni, a trailblazing figure in Israeli stage production and one of the first female producers in the country's entertainment industry, has died at the age of 88. Born in Poland in 1938, she immigrated to Israel as part of the Tehran Children rescue operation. Etzioni served in the Israel Defense Forces as coordinator of the artists' bureau in the entertainment branch before launching her career in cultural production.
After her military service, she worked with leading producers such as Giora Godik and Moshe Walin before founding her own production company, breaking new ground for women in the field. From 1970, through the Yuval Theater, she produced numerous stage shows, musicals, and children’s performances. Etzioni managed the careers of prominent Israeli artists including Hanna Laszlo, Gavri Banai, Nathan Datner, and Odia Koren, remaining active in production until her final days.
She described her role as a producer as realizing artistic visions and dreams, emphasizing her commitment to supporting creators from concept to completion. Etzioni received lifetime achievement awards from ACUM (Israel's Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), the Israeli Producers and Agents Association, and the Israeli Artists Association. On the most recent Independence Day, she was honored as a Worthy Citizen of Tel Aviv. She is survived by her two sons, Yuval and Eyal.
