Campaign to Honor Maya Vishniak Gains Momentum Ahead of Murder Verdict
The Tel Aviv District Court is set to hold a sentencing hearing this Sunday for Amit Almog, convicted of murdering his partner, Maya Vishniak. Ahead of the verdict, the social initiative "The Shame Shifts Side" is intensifying its public campaign in Maya's memory by unveiling two new billboards in Oranit, her hometown, and Ramat Hasharon, where she was educated. These new billboards join existing ones in Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan near the convicted killer's family home, all featuring Maya's image alongside the message "The Shame Shifts Side" and a verse from a song by Shalom Hanoch. The campaign aims to generate public pressure to ensure justice for Maya and to honor her memory while supporting her family, who have awaited the court's decision for years.
Maya Vishniak was murdered in 2020 before turning 22, and her case has become a painful symbol of violence against women in Israel. The "The Shame Shifts Side" initiative, founded by Yael Vered, works to change public discourse on violence against women through large-scale social campaigns, billboards, and public activities. This is the first time the initiative has revisited a figure previously featured in its campaigns, expanding its efforts as the legal process nears completion.
Yael Vered emphasized the slow pace of justice and the ongoing prevalence of violence against women, stating, "The process of shifting the shame side has been happening in recent years, but much work remains. We have supported Maya's family for years and want everyone to know: she was a woman who is no longer with us. We will never normalize such phenomena. We strengthen the family and demand the maximum sentence for the murderer in the upcoming trial."
