Campaign Demands Maximum Sentence Ahead of Maya Vishnyak Murder Verdict
A new public campaign titled "Justice for Maya" has been launched ahead of the verdict in the trial of Amit Almog, convicted of murdering Maya Vishnyak. The initiative, led by the project "The Shame Shifts Side," has expanded by placing two new billboards in Oranit, Maya's hometown, and Ramat Hasharon, where she grew up and studied. These join existing billboards in Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan near Almog's family home, all featuring Maya's photo alongside the slogans "The Shame Shifts Side" and "Justice for Maya," as well as a verse from a song by Shalom Hanoch.
The campaign aims to raise public awareness as the legal process concludes and calls for the full enforcement of justice against the convicted murderer. It also seeks to honor Maya's memory and support her family, who have awaited the verdict for years. Maya Vishnyak was murdered in 2020 at age 21, a case that sparked significant public discourse on violence against women in Israel.
Founded by Yael Vered, "The Shame Shifts Side" project focuses on combating violence against women through public campaigns, billboards, and educational efforts. Vered noted this is the first time the project has spotlighted a specific victim's case as the trial nears its end. She emphasized the slow pace of justice and the ongoing prevalence of violence against women, stressing society's duty to ensure each case resonates and is not forgotten. The campaign has supported Maya's family for years and demands the maximum sentence for Almog in the upcoming verdict.
