Mitsubishi Motors Partners with Startup to Mass-Produce Humanoid Robots by 2027
Mitsubishi Motors has announced a strategic partnership with Tokyo University spin-off startup Highlanders to develop and mass-produce humanoid robots. The companies aim to begin production in 2027 at Mitsubishi's Kyoto factory, targeting a monthly output of approximately 1,000 units. This initiative marks an unprecedented move in the automotive industry, leveraging Mitsubishi's decades of manufacturing expertise, quality control, and engineering knowledge to create a new generation of advanced industrial robots.
Initially, these robots will be integrated into Mitsubishi's own production lines to perform tasks such as transporting parts and assembling engines. The internal deployment will enable the company to collect critical operational data to enhance system performance and reliability. Mitsubishi is also considering marketing the robots to other companies in the future, potentially establishing itself as a major player in the global robotics market.
This collaboration addresses Japan's worsening labor shortage, especially in manufacturing sectors, by fostering a new industrial model where humans and robots work together. Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato described the project as a step toward building a new industrial infrastructure combining human and robotic labor. Highlanders CEO Hiroya Masuoka called the mass production of Japanese-developed humanoid robots a significant breakthrough for future challenges.
The move aligns with a broader global automotive trend where manufacturers leverage their expertise to enter robotics, driven by the shift to electric vehicles and demographic changes worldwide.
