Police Officer Injured in Violent Clash During Minor Arrest in Jerusalem's Bar Ilan Neighborhood
A routine arrest of a minor suspected of attempting to break into a car in Jerusalem's Bar Ilan neighborhood escalated rapidly into a violent confrontation on Thursday. Police said the arrest sparked anger among local residents, leading to a crowd of about 200 rioters, reportedly from extremist ultra-Orthodox circles, who attacked officers with stones and objects and tried to forcibly free the detainee.
The incident began when a citizen alerted police to a suspect trying to break into his parked vehicle. Patrol officers from the Jerusalem central station quickly located and arrested the minor. However, as the officers attempted to leave with the suspect, a large crowd gathered and quickly turned hostile, surrounding the police in a tight ring.
According to police, the rioters escalated from verbal protests to physical violence, throwing stones, blocks, and other items at the officers. Some even tried to pull the minor from the officers’ custody. During the melee, one officer sustained minor injuries and required on-site medical treatment. A police vehicle was also damaged.
After a tense and prolonged confrontation, police managed to restore order, disperse the crowd, and take the suspect for further identification and investigation at the central Jerusalem station. Authorities condemned the attack on officers, emphasizing the seriousness of obstructing law enforcement and the impact on public safety and service.
