Hapoel Tel Aviv Signs Former NBA Forward Amir Coffey for One Season
Hapoel Tel Aviv surprised fans on Thursday by signing American forward Amir Coffey, a player with notable NBA experience. The club kept the signing confidential until the official announcement. Coffey agreed to a one-year contract worth approximately $1.2 million.
The club had attempted to recruit Coffey earlier last season and during the season when his future in the NBA was uncertain. However, Coffey secured a contract with the Phoenix Suns, causing the deal with Hapoel to be canceled. Throughout this period, Hapoel maintained contact with Coffey and hoped that this time he would not secure an NBA contract.
As opportunities in the NBA began to diminish, Hapoel renewed their efforts, and Coffey was eager to join the ambitious European-level project. Coffey is expected to be one of the leading players under coach Dimitris Itoudis. Contrary to some reports, Colin Malcolm remains with the team and will serve as Coffey's backup. While Coffey has NBA experience, he lacks European basketball experience, which the club is prepared to manage.
