Irish Police Hunt Middle Eastern Asylum Seeker for Murder of American Woman in Killarney
Jamie Carney, a 43-year-old American woman living in Killarney, Ireland, was found dead in her home on Tuesday afternoon by her 13-year-old daughter. Carney had suffered severe head injuries and was believed to have been beaten to death. Local police have launched a murder investigation and are searching for a male suspect described as "from the Middle East," who was known to Carney.
The suspect is an asylum seeker who arrived in Ireland in 2024 and lived in a migrant reception center. Authorities believe Carney and the suspect had known each other for about a year and a half, possibly meeting at a pro-Palestinian demonstration against the war in Gaza. Police are also investigating reports of a confrontation between Carney and a man the night before her body was discovered.
Carney, originally from Westchester, New York, moved to Killarney in 2021 and worked in healthcare consulting in Tralee. Following a post-mortem examination, the case was officially upgraded to a murder inquiry. Police have issued a nationwide alert with the suspect’s name and photo, fearing he may have fled to Northern Ireland shortly after the killing. Because he is an asylum seeker without a passport, all airports and seaports are under surveillance.
Local officials and Carney’s acquaintances expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. An independent council member who had supported Carney described the community as deeply shaken. Carney’s family in the United States has been informed and is expected to travel to Ireland later this week.
