Irish Police Hunt Middle Eastern Asylum Seeker for Murder of American Woman Linked to Gaza Protest
Jamie Carney, a 43-year-old American woman living in Killarney, Ireland, was found dead in her home on Tuesday afternoon by her 13-year-old daughter. Carney was discovered severely beaten in bed, with fatal head injuries. Local police have launched a murder investigation and are searching for a male suspect described as "from the Middle East," who was known to Carney. The suspect is an asylum seeker who arrived in Ireland in 2024 and lived in a migrant reception center. Authorities believe Carney and the suspect had known each other for about a year and a half, possibly having met at a pro-Palestinian protest against the Gaza war.
Investigators are examining reports that Carney was involved in an altercation with a man the night before her body was found. Carney had moved from Westchester, New York, to Killarney in 2021 and worked in healthcare consulting in Tralee. Following a post-mortem examination, the case was officially upgraded to a murder inquiry. Police released the suspect's name and photo nationwide and suspect he fled north to Northern Ireland shortly after the killing. Since he is an asylum seeker without a passport, all airports and seaports are under surveillance to prevent his escape.
Friends and local officials expressed shock over the murder. Independent council member Martin Grady, who had provided professional support to Carney, said the entire community was shaken. Carney's family in the United States has been informed and is expected to travel to Ireland later this week. Police continue their search amid concerns the suspect may have crossed the border into Northern Ireland after the crime.
