Israeli Authorities Foil Cigarette Smuggling Hidden in Pineapples to Gaza Under Humanitarian Aid Cover
Israeli security forces intercepted an unusual smuggling attempt to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday at the Kerem Shalom crossing. Thousands of cigarettes were concealed inside hundreds of pineapples intended to enter Gaza as part of a humanitarian aid shipment. The discovery was made during a security inspection by the Crossings Authority under the Ministry of Defense.
The shipment was purchased by an Israeli company authorized to operate within the private sector framework for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. After the cigarettes were found, the truck and its entire cargo were confiscated and handed over to customs and relevant authorities for further action. Following the incident, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Major General Yoav (Yoram) Halevi, immediately suspended the company's permit to bring aid into Gaza until further notice.
The Coordinator's office emphasized its commitment to zero tolerance regarding any smuggling or misuse of humanitarian aid channels. The operation involved coordination between the Crossings Authority, customs, and other security agencies to prevent exploitation of aid mechanisms.
This event highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring goods entering Gaza and the strict measures Israeli authorities maintain to prevent illicit activities under the guise of humanitarian assistance.
