Trump Declares U.S. Ceases Ceasefire Amid Escalating Strikes on Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that, from his perspective, the ceasefire with Iran is over following a night of extensive American airstrikes against Iranian targets. These strikes were a response to Iran's attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that the U.S. attacks were "20 times stronger than the last time" and condemned Iran as "a bunch of sick people" who should not be allowed nuclear weapons. When asked about the nuclear deal with Tehran, Trump dismissed it as "over" and "a waste of time," calling Iran "liars."

While attending the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump received support from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who described the strikes as "completely justified" and emphasized the importance of curbing Iran's nuclear capabilities for Israel and global security. However, Trump criticized European NATO members, particularly Spain, threatening to cancel all trade with them amid growing tensions over defense commitments and budgets within the alliance.

The U.S. strikes targeted Iranian military radar systems, missile launchers, and Revolutionary Guard vessels. These actions followed inflammatory rhetoric from Tehran, where during the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, posters were displayed calling for Trump's assassination and offering a $100 million bounty on his head. Trump responded harshly to reports of being on Iranian hit lists, calling Iran "cancer" and "scum" and asserting that the U.S. wasted time dealing with them.

The airstrikes were authorized by Trump during an emergency meeting with top U.S. officials in Ankara, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Iran's Revolutionary Guard retaliated with missile and drone attacks on 85 significant U.S. military sites, including the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, reportedly downing an American MQ-9 drone.

Heightened tensions triggered air raid sirens across Bahrain, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, with authorities urging civilians to seek shelter. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian abruptly left Najaf, Iraq, where he attended Khamenei's funeral, to return to Tehran to manage the security crisis. Despite the escalation, U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth plans to proceed with his first official visit to Israel, though it remains uncertain if the ongoing conflict will affect his schedule.
