US Strikes Over 80 Iranian Targets in Response to Hormuz Strait Attacks

The United States launched attacks overnight on more than 80 targets in Iran following Iranian assaults on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. According to a statement from the US Central Command, American forces targeted Iran's air defense systems, command centers, and communication networks. Additionally, over 60 small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were struck in the strait.

A US official told Sky News that the strikes also hit energy facilities and ports, emphasizing that the attacks were punitive rather than proportional. In response, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister condemned the strikes as a violation of the memorandum of understanding and vowed to protect Iran's national interests by necessary means.

The US Treasury recently revoked a permit allowing Iran to produce and sell oil, a move linked to a series of incidents involving oil tankers in the strategic shipping route. A senior US official described Iran's actions in the strait as "completely unacceptable" and warned of consequences, while also noting ongoing mediation efforts toward a final deal.

Mohsen Rezaei, advisor to Mojtaba Khamenei, criticized the US, stating it would cause the negotiations to fail. The day before the strikes, the Revolutionary Guard fired missiles at two commercial ships near the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian state media confirming at least one tanker carrying liquefied gas was targeted for ignoring warnings. Reports indicate at least one vessel was hit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi referenced Article 13 of the memorandum, asserting that final agreement talks cannot begin amid ongoing threats and urged respect for signed commitments.
