Floor Collapses at Brazilian Birthday Party, Dozens Fall Into Basement
A 15th birthday party in Belém, northern Brazil, turned into a disaster when the floor of a historic mansion collapsed beneath the guests. Anna Beatriz was celebrating her birthday with around 230 attendees when the floor suddenly gave way, causing dozens to fall into the basement below. At least 11 people were injured, suffering fractures, cuts, and bleeding, and were taken to hospitals for treatment. Anna herself fell but was unharmed.
Eyewitnesses described the panic as the floor opened without warning. One injured guest, Marília Freire, recounted the traumatic moment and her injuries. Anna's mother fainted upon seeing the injured guests. The family had planned the celebration for two years, spending approximately 40,000 Brazilian reais (about $7,800). They are now demanding that the venue owners cover the event costs and assist the victims.
The mansion, a historic building supported by stilts at the rear, was closed after the collapse. Authorities are awaiting an engineering inspection to determine the cause. The local municipality is monitoring the situation and aiding the injured, while the venue owners claim cooperation with authorities. However, no official police investigation has yet been opened. In a show of support, friends and family organized an impromptu street celebration for Anna the day after the accident, offering her a moment of joy despite the tragedy.
