Israeli Rescue Unit Rabbis Convene to Address Complex Halachic and Operational Challenges
On Sunday, senior rabbis from the "Koach Hatzalah" unit of the Israeli emergency organization "United Hatzalah" gathered at the organization's headquarters in Bnei Brak for a specialized halachic and professional meeting. The session focused on deepening the unit's activities and addressing complex halachic, medical, and operational issues currently facing the team.
The meeting was led by Laser Hyman, Vice President and Head of Volunteers and Operations, alongside Deputy Head of the Halacha Department Rabbi David Dishi, Koach Hatzalah Unit Manager Rabbi Shimshon Grossberger, and Deputy Unit Manager Rabbi Israel Alter. Also present were the organization's Chief Rabbi Rabbi Yeshayahu Karlitz, National Halacha Coordinator Rabbi Naftali Halperin, and Koach Hatzalah Coordinator Ben Zion Spitzer. Rabbis serving as heads of the organization's branches across Israel also participated, including Rabbi Sinai Halberstam (Bnei Brak), Rabbi Israel Berzovsky (Beitar Illit), Rabbi Moshe Brandsofer (Jerusalem Zion), Rabbi Shmuel Yosef Steizberg (Beit Shemesh), Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Baniel (Modi'in Illit), Rabbi Tzvi Landman (Nof Jerusalem), and Rabbi Avraham Garcia (Elad).
A significant portion of the discussions centered on the sensitive halachic and practical challenges related to saving lives on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. The rabbis explored operational and halachic solutions for searching for missing persons during these times, including integrating advanced drone technology from the organization's drone unit and addressing the complex emotional and medical support provided by the organization's resilience unit in emergencies. Due to a recent increase in such cases, the rabbis decided to implement specialized training for managing missing persons searches on Shabbat and holidays.
The rabbis aimed to provide clear and precise guidelines for Koach Hatzalah volunteers, balancing strict adherence to Jewish law with an uncompromising commitment to the value of saving lives. The meeting underscored the organization's dedication to both halachic integrity and operational effectiveness in emergency response.
