Jewish Real Estate Agent Brutally Attacked in Toronto Amid Hate Crime Investigation
Yosef Biton, a Jewish real estate agent and lawyer from the Toronto area, was violently attacked this week by a man who threatened to kill him while shouting antisemitic slurs, including calling Jews "baby killers committing genocide." Biton sustained bruises and scratches during the assault. In a Facebook post, he expressed shock, saying, "This is not the Canada I have lived in for 64 years."
The incident occurred on a Tuesday afternoon near Jane Street and Lawrence West in Toronto, where Biton was managing a commercial property. The attacker, who identified himself as Yemeni and a Houthi, began swinging a parking signpost at Biton. Biton immediately called 911, informing the operator that he was being attacked because he was openly Jewish and that the assailant was threatening his life.
During the attack, the assailant threw various objects at Biton, including a brick that hit his arm, metal pieces, and a tree branch. Biton managed to block and dodge the objects, resulting in scrapes and bruises on both arms. Despite the attack lasting over half an hour and numerous witnesses present at a nearby bus stop and surrounding area, no one intervened except a retail tenant who knew Biton and tried to de-escalate the situation.
Toronto police were eventually called to the scene and arrested the attacker, identified as 58-year-old Abdulqadir Al-Jalani, a city resident. He faces three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering death threats. The police are investigating the case as a potential hate crime. Authorities noted that if a crime is suspected to be motivated by bias or hatred, this factor may be considered an aggravating circumstance during sentencing if the suspect is convicted.
