Ultra-Orthodox Protests Cause Over 600 Million Shekels in Damage to Jerusalem Light Rail Construction

Extreme ultra-Orthodox factions have caused over 600 million shekels in damages to the infrastructure, tracks, and heavy engineering equipment at the Bar Ilan segment of the Jerusalem Light Rail construction site, according to a report by The Marker. This figure marks a significant increase from less than two years ago, when damages were estimated at approximately 326 million shekels. The vandalism has persisted for about six years and has intensified recently with deliberate arson attacks on expensive machinery and equipment. Footage from this week showed a protester entering the sterile construction area during a concrete pour, disrupting the process.

Despite extensive documentation of these acts, no indictments have been filed against the perpetrators. This lack of legal action continues even though the Jerusalem police district received a special, exceptional budget increase from the Finance Ministry about a year ago, specifically to address the security challenges posed by the light rail construction protests. Government officials have expressed concern over the ongoing damage and the absence of prosecutions, highlighting the complexity of managing the security situation at the site.
