Colombia's president compared the war in Gaza to the Nazi era in the UN Security Council. Israel's ambassador to the UN attacked the remarks: "Cynical rhetoric that harms the memory of the Holocaust"

Colombian President Gustavo Petro caused a סערה today (Wednesday) after speaking at the UN Security Council and comparing Israel's actions in Gaza to the Nazi regime. The speech came just days after Petro posted the Nazi slogan "Heil Hitler" on X, a post that drew condemnation around the world and led to harsh criticism of his remarks toward Israel.
During his speech, Petro claimed that what is happening in Gaza resembles the Nazi period. "This is what rains missiles on people, on babies. Twenty thousand people have been killed in Gaza. These numbers cannot be hidden. And this is the real connecting line of my words here: we are returning to the Nazi era."
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, sharply attacked the Colombian president's remarks and the very giving of a platform to such statements in the Security Council. "It's not clear what he took before this morning's discussion, but nothing justifies his words," Danon said.
Danon added, "The UN Security Council was not established to serve as a stage for delusional ideological views and the distortion of the memory of the Holocaust. Giving legitimacy to this cynical rhetoric harms the memory of the Holocaust and clearly undermines the credibility of the UN institution. When leaders around the world use Hitler and Goebbels to attack political opponents, they fuel dangerous antisemitic discourse. Petro, you should be ashamed of your words."
