Saudi Arabia Holds Direct Talks with Iran Amid Strained US Relations and Regional Security Concerns

Saudi Arabia is engaging in direct negotiations with Iran to address critical security issues, including control over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's ballistic missile program, and its support for proxy groups. These talks aim to protect Saudi interests in the event of renewed intense conflict, particularly between Israel, the US, and Iran. The New York Times revealed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in 2024 as part of these efforts. The strained ties with the US intensified following Saudi opposition to an American plan to open the Strait of Hormuz, which was ultimately canceled less than two days after it began. Former US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Senator Marco Rubio, engaged in multiple communications with Saudi leadership, but the Crown Prince resisted US pressure, fearing the plan would reignite war.

Experts note that Saudi Arabia has lost trust in the US, doubting its reliability and fearing that allowing US airspace use could lead to harsher Iranian retaliation. The conflict with Iran has exposed widening gaps between Riyadh and Washington regarding regional security, especially concerning Iran and Israel. Consequently, Saudi Arabia is pursuing independent diplomatic initiatives, strengthening ties with countries like Pakistan and China.

Further evidence of the diplomatic rift surfaced when Senator Rubio visited Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE but skipped Saudi Arabia, a move perceived as a deliberate slight by Riyadh. Additionally, reports indicate that the US is considering reducing its military presence in Saudi Arabia, potentially relocating forces to countries more supportive during the conflict, such as Israel and Jordan, though no final decisions have been made.

These developments underscore Saudi Arabia's strategic shift toward autonomous regional policies and direct engagement with Iran amid deteriorating relations with its traditional ally, the United States.
