Saudi Arabia Blocks US Military Operation in Strait of Hormuz, Straining Ties

Amid escalating regional security tensions, the Wall Street Journal revealed a previously unreported diplomatic clash between Saudi Arabia and the United States. Saudi Arabia refused American forces access to its bases and airspace, effectively halting "Operation Freedom," a US military mission intended to secure free passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Over 100 US military aircraft launched from bases and warships across the Middle East were impeded by this Saudi blockade.

The White House responded with anger, threatening to delay the delivery of Patriot missiles critical for Saudi defense against Iranian attacks. Ultimately, Saudi Arabia relented, but US officials told the Wall Street Journal that the damage to bilateral relations would not be easily repaired. The diplomatic strain was also evident in protocol: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a regional visit, excluded Riyadh from his itinerary, a move perceived by Saudi officials as a deliberate insult. Additionally, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman declined to attend the G7 summit in France, unlike leaders from the UAE, Qatar, and Egypt.

In light of these developments, the US is reportedly considering reducing its military presence in Saudi Arabia and shifting forces to countries supportive of the conflict, primarily Israel and Jordan. However, US sources emphasized that these plans are preliminary and no final decisions have been made.
