US Warns Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood Over Iranian-Backed Militias Amid Ongoing Conflict
Sudanese rebels recently seized the military headquarters in El Fasher amid escalating conflict in Sudan. A senior US State Department official revealed in exclusive remarks to the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Wednesday that the United States has issued a stern warning to the Muslim Brotherhood faction in Sudan. This group is reportedly receiving training and support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The official emphasized that the US administration under President Trump is deeply engaged in diplomatic efforts to resolve multiple crises across Africa, including Somalia and the Sahel region. Regarding Sudan, he stated unequivocally that there is no military solution to the ongoing conflict. He urged all fighting parties to negotiate unconditionally to end violence and alleviate the severe suffering of the Sudanese people.
The US is pushing for a humanitarian ceasefire, an end to external military support fueling the violence, and unrestricted humanitarian aid access. The goal is to facilitate a transition to civilian governance and sustainable peace.
The Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan was designated a global terrorist and foreign criminal organization by the US State Department in March. The official accused the group of using extreme violence against civilians to undermine peace efforts and spread its radical Islamic ideology. Many of its operatives have allegedly been trained and supported by the IRGC and have carried out mass executions.
In September 2025, the US labeled the "Al-Baraa ibn Malik Brigade," affiliated with the Brotherhood, as a terrorist organization due to its brutal role in Sudan’s war and ties to Iran. The official condemned the Iranian regime for funding and directing malign activities worldwide through the IRGC and vowed that the US will use all available means to cut off resources to Iran and its allied Brotherhood factions. The designation of Brotherhood branches in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Sudan as terrorist groups reflects ongoing US efforts to combat the violence and instability they propagate globally, with further designations expected as needed.
