Israeli Court Charges Bedouin Man With Drug Smuggling via Drones at Egypt Border
The Southern District Prosecutor's Office filed charges on Tuesday against Fouad Alataika, 20, from Masaudin Al-Azazmeh, accusing him of smuggling tens of kilograms of hashish from Egypt into Israel using drones. The indictment, submitted to the Beersheba District Court, includes offenses such as violating state sovereignty at the border, importing and possessing dangerous drugs, reckless conduct, and obstructing a police officer during duty. The charge of violating state sovereignty carries a sentence of up to nine years in prison.
Earlier this month, the Knesset approved a new criminal law targeting smugglers crossing Israel's borders, particularly via drones, citing the threat these activities pose to national security. Despite measures including designating the Egypt border area as a closed military zone, drone smuggling has persisted, raising concerns about border security and potential exploitation by terrorist organizations.
According to the indictment prepared by attorney Hila Malul, Alataika conspired with a 16-year-old minor and others, including an individual on the Egyptian side, to import drugs using drones. The group coordinated drone flights carrying packages of hashish across the border. After receiving the shipments, Alataika and the minor concealed approximately 45 kilograms of hashish near Highway 40. When police arrived, the two attempted to flee, ignoring orders to stop and only being apprehended after police fired at their vehicle's tires. They then tried to escape on foot before being arrested.
Malul emphasized the severity of the charges, noting the heightened security situation in Israel and the ongoing attempts by hostile entities to recruit Israeli citizens for smuggling operations motivated by financial gain. A separate indictment was also filed against the minor involved, submitted to the Beersheba Juvenile Court.
