Israeli Leaders Condemn Incendiary Remarks Against IDF Chief Amid Anti-Draft Rally

Following a controversial anti-conscription rally in Bnei Brak where Rabbi Aryeh Yazdi cursed IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, top Israeli officials strongly condemned the remarks on Tuesday morning. President Isaac Herzog called the statement "shocking" and emphasized that even amid deep disagreements, disrespect and curses against the military commander are unacceptable. Herzog urged all public leaders to maintain responsible and respectful discourse.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused ultra-Orthodox factions of inciting violence against soldiers and criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu and his ministers for their silence. Lapid said, "They allow the blood of the Chief of Staff to be spilled, and the government remains silent like fish." Avigdor Lieberman, head of Yisrael Beiteinu, labeled the incitement at the rally, which included participation from coalition MKs, as a national disgrace and blamed the current government for politically supporting draft evaders to maintain power.

Democratic Party leader Yair Golan condemned Shas MKs present at the rally for remaining silent while the Chief of Staff's life was threatened. He accused Shas and its leader Aryeh Deri of forming an alliance with Netanyahu that harms Israeli society and vowed to reverse the situation by demanding equal civic responsibility.

Defense Minister Israel Katz also denounced the incitement against the IDF leadership, calling it dangerous and unacceptable. Katz praised the Chief of Staff and commanders for leading Israel’s defense and stressed that crossing lines of incitement against those responsible for national security is forbidden, even during public disagreements.

The incident highlights growing tensions over military conscription in Israel, particularly involving ultra-Orthodox communities, and has prompted calls for political accountability and respectful dialogue regarding the IDF and its leadership.
