Brisk Meets Makhnovka, as a Chassidic Yeshiva Marks Two Years of Change
One of the biggest surprises in the world of Chassidic yeshivas is undoubtedly the large Makhnovka Belz yeshiva in Jerusalem, which is now completing its second year and has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most serious Chassidic yeshivas for in-depth study. By order of the Makhnovka Belz Rebbe, special emphasis was placed on selecting a staff of roshei yeshiva from among students of the Brisk Yeshiva, as well as on the Brisk-style method of study that has taken hold. Indeed, in just its second year, the yeshiva now numbers close to 150 outstanding students from the Makhnovka community and other holy communities.
The parents of the students gathered for a special strengthening event led by the distinguished staff, together with the founding of the committee for the large yeshiva, the Rebbe’s emissaries for establishing and strengthening the institution. The gathering was conducted firmly by the head of the Makhnovka yeshivas, Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua Englender, son of the long-time patron of the institutions, philanthropist Rabbi Elis Englender of England. In his remarks, the head of the yeshivas praised the founder and rosh yeshiva of the large yeshiva, Rabbi Y. Lieberman, saying that together they are raising the banner of Torah in the Chassidic yeshiva world. The Rebbe’s blessing was conveyed by his son-in-law, the community rabbi Rabbi Y.M. Moshkovitz, and by his son, Rabbi Shalom Rokach, the community rabbi in Beitar. The address on education was delivered by the veteran mentor, Rabbi Mordechai Aryeh Friedman, and by the maggid shiur Rabbi M. Segal.
