Israeli Police Chief Holds Emergency Meeting After 143 Arab Community Killings This Year
Following one of the deadliest 24-hour periods in recent memory for Israel's Arab community, Israel Police Commissioner Major General Danny Levi is convening an urgent meeting with senior police leadership to address the ongoing violence and crime within Arab society. The meeting comes after five people were murdered across four locations in less than 12 hours: Tayibe, Kalansawa, Jaffa, and Holon. Authorities suspect these killings are linked to disputes between criminal organizations and families.
The violence began shortly after midnight in Tayibe, where 19-year-old Bakr Nuseirat was shot dead outside his home shortly after returning from a wedding with family. Another young man was critically injured. Police believe the motive involves an internal family feud. Notably, Nuseirat was killed at the same site where his cousin, Moatasem Nuseirat, was murdered last year despite a reconciliation agreement reached months prior. Police body camera footage revealed family members washing the crime scene shortly after the shooting, raising concerns about evidence contamination.
Later, in Kalansawa, Adnan Ganem and Galeb Abu Ras were fatally shot after assailants on electric motorcycles blocked their vehicle and opened fire. Police are investigating a blood feud between families as the likely cause. Shortly thereafter, a powerful car bomb exploded in Jaffa on Saharon Street, killing Iyad A’rab while his six-year-old son was lightly injured and another person sustained moderate injuries. The blast caused significant damage to nearby vehicles and buildings.
Another car bomb detonated near a gas station in Holon, killing Mustafa Abu Lassan from Jaffa. Witnesses described the explosion as intense, with the vehicle engulfed in flames within seconds. This spate of violence has brought the total number of Arab community murders in Israel to 143 since the start of the year, many of which remain unsolved. Families of victims and officials alike emphasize the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to reduce violence rather than reactive measures following each wave of killings.
