MK Tzvi Sukkot Wins Defamation Suit Against Former IDF Deputy Chief Dan Harel
Member of Knesset Tzvi Sukkot won a defamation lawsuit against retired Major General Dan Harel, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the IDF, following Harel's claims about troop deployments. The Central District Magistrate's Court President, Judge Menachem Mizrachi, ruled that Harel's statements constituted defamation. Harel was ordered to pay Sukkot 35,000 shekels in damages and cover legal fees of 10,000 shekels plus VAT each to Sukkot and Yossi Dagan, head of the Shomron Regional Council.
The lawsuit stemmed from Harel's interview on the program "Meet the Press," where he alleged that IDF forces were redirected from the Gaza border area to secure a protest sukkah established by Sukkot in Hawara amid a wave of attacks. Harel also claimed this troop movement was due to political pressure. Sukkot filed the suit demanding 100,000 shekels, arguing that Harel's statements were false and harmed his reputation by implying indirect responsibility for a security failure that led to a massacre.
During the trial, official IDF documents were presented showing no transfer of forces from the Southern Command to Judea and Samaria before the Hamas attack, contradicting Harel's claims. The court found that the troop reinforcement in Hawara was part of a pre-planned operation months earlier, with soldiers from the Egoz unit coming from a general reserve rather than from Gaza border defense forces. Judge Mizrachi noted that Harel's allegations did not align with the official IDF data.
This ruling clarifies the facts surrounding the troop deployments and reinforces the legal boundaries regarding public accusations by senior military figures against politicians. The case highlights the sensitivity of security-related statements amid ongoing tensions in the West Bank and Gaza regions.
