Patient Dies After Suspected Error in IV Needle Insertion at Meir Hospital
A 55-year-old woman who was moderately injured in a car accident near Kalansawa was admitted to Meir Hospital's intensive care unit last week. According to reports, during her treatment, there was suspicion that the intravenous needle insertion was performed incorrectly. The patient’s condition deteriorated overnight, and despite intervention by the ICU director early in the morning, she ultimately passed away.
The car accident involved two vehicles on Road 5614, with another man around 55 years old sustaining severe injuries. Medical sources explained that while IV needle insertion is a routine procedure performed hundreds of times daily in hospitals, it requires sterile technique, and deviations from protocol can lead to serious complications or even death.
Following the incident, Meir Hospital initiated an internal investigation and reported the case to the Ministry of Health, which is currently examining the circumstances. The hospital expressed condolences to the family but declined to provide further details due to patient confidentiality. The Ministry of Health confirmed the event was reported and is under review.
