Israeli Knesset Committee to Discuss Emergency Freeze on Criminal Proceedings Against Haredi Torah Students

Boaz Bismuth, chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, announced plans to convene an emergency session this week to approve a temporary order halting criminal proceedings and arrests against Haredi yeshiva students who refuse military conscription. This decisive move follows formal requests from Defense Minister Israel Katz and Government Secretary Yossi Fox, based on professional assessments from officials responsible for integrating Haredim into the Israel Defense Forces and yeshiva leaders. Bismuth sent an official letter to Katz and Fox confirming his agreement to hold the committee meeting, emphasizing that the ongoing arrests are undermining recruitment efforts and alienating the Haredi community.
