Australian Tourist Arrested in Thailand After Teen Girl's Body Found in Suitcase

Simon Kerman, a 45-year-old Australian tourist, was arrested in Thailand on suspicion of involvement in the death of 17-year-old Thai girl Tunchanok Donhomla. Authorities found the girl's body inside a black suitcase discarded near a railway track about ten minutes from the hotel where the two were last seen together. Security footage captured Kerman and Donhomla holding hands as they entered the hotel, and later showed Kerman leaving with the suitcase. Additional footage showed a person riding a motorcycle with the suitcase tied behind, traveling along the railway before returning to the hotel without it.

Police discovered signs of a struggle and bloodstains in the hotel room registered to Kerman. No one else was recorded entering or leaving the room except the two. Kerman denies involvement in the girl's death but is being investigated for murder and has previously been charged with soliciting a minor for indecent acts. At the time of his arrest at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, where he was attempting to leave the country, Kerman had scratches on his neck and arms.

Local police commanders stated the evidence against Kerman is "particularly strong" and investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances of Donhomla's death. If convicted of murder, Kerman could face life imprisonment or the death penalty under Thai law. The investigation hinges on the timeline captured by surveillance cameras showing the girl entering the hotel with Kerman, the suitcase leaving the hotel, and the subsequent discovery of the body near the railway tracks.
