Thai Flight Attendant Arrested for Smuggling Heroin into Australia
A 26-year-old Thai flight attendant was arrested last week upon landing in Melbourne on an international flight, accused of smuggling one kilogram of heroin into Australia. The seizure occurred after a routine X-ray scan of her luggage at Melbourne International Airport revealed suspicious anomalies, prompting customs officials to conduct a physical inspection. Inside the luggage, authorities found 12 cloth bags containing white powder that tested positive for heroin, valued at approximately 500,000 Australian dollars (about 344,000 US dollars).
The woman faces two criminal charges related to importing and possessing a dangerous drug, each carrying a maximum sentence of up to 25 years in prison. She arrived in Melbourne on June 25, but details of the case were only made public after formal charges were filed. She is scheduled to appear in a Melbourne court in September.
Australian Border Force representatives emphasized the country’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug smuggling attempts, regardless of the suspect’s status or occupation. They highlighted the use of advanced intelligence and scanning technologies to detect such attempts early. Authorities have not disclosed the airline or the flight route involved. The investigation is ongoing, with police examining whether this is an isolated incident or part of a larger smuggling network.
This case adds to previous incidents involving airline crew members caught smuggling drugs into Australia, with some having received lengthy prison sentences in Sydney and Melbourne airports. Australian law enforcement noted that airports remain key targets for drug trafficking, leading to increased operational and technological efforts in recent years to combat the problem.
