EuroLeague set to add Beşiktaş and expand to 24 teams from 2027/28
The EuroLeague is holding a decisive board meeting on Friday as preparations for the 2026/27 season continue, with the composition of the competition at the center of the agenda. According to a BasketNews report cited by Sport 5, Beşiktaş is expected to join the league and take Monaco’s place, after league bosses had also considered running the competition with 19 teams.
The same report says the Turkish club is likely to become the 20th participant in Europe’s top basketball competition. At the same time, the EuroLeague is expected to approve a larger expansion to 24 teams beginning with the 2027/28 season.
The report quoted the outlet as saying, “If there are no last-minute changes, that is what will happen,” adding that “these proposals have already received the support of the shareholders.” The article says the decisions come as planning for the 2026/27 campaign is already underway.
The current projected field includes Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Anadolu Efes, ASVEL, Baskonia, Beşiktaş, Red Star, Dubai, Milan, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Fenerbahce, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Paris, Partizan, Real Madrid, Valencia, Virtus Bologna and Zalgiris.
