Monaco is expected to step away from the EuroLeague, while league shareholders consider an unusual format change for the 2026/27 season, according to BasketNews. The Riviera club, which has played in the EuroLeague for the past five seasons after reaching it through the EuroCup, is reportedly preparing a temporary step back from the competition.
Sources say Monaco had already secured a 3-plus-2 license structure through the EuroCup, and its long-term goal remains returning to the EuroLeague as a permanent franchise. The club is also said to be positioning itself for the league’s expected expansion to 24 teams, while improving its finances and completing an ongoing transition in its ownership and sponsorship structure.
If Monaco leaves, the EuroLeague could fill the open spot with another team via a wildcard. Besiktas is viewed inside the league as the leading candidate to receive such an invitation.
A second option is also under discussion, shareholders are expected to debate whether to start the new season with only 19 teams instead of replacing Monaco. That would give one team a bye each round and reduce the workload on clubs.
