EuroLeague set to add Besiktas and expand to 24 teams
EuroLeague officials are holding a decisive board meeting on Friday over the lineup for the 2026/27 season, as preparations for the upcoming campaign continue. According to a BasketNews report, Besiktas is expected to join the competition, replacing Monaco after league executives had also considered running a 19-team format.
The Turkish club is now projected to take the last available spot and enter Europe’s top basketball competition. In parallel, the league is expected to approve a wider expansion to 24 clubs starting with the 2027/28 season.
The report said, “If there are no last-minute changes, that is what will happen,” adding that the proposals have already received the support of the shareholders. The article lists the expected 20-team field for the next season, including Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Other teams named in the projected lineup are Anadolu Efes, ASVEL, Baskonia, Crvena zvezda, Dubai, Olimpia Milano, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Fenerbahce, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Paris, Partizan, Real Madrid, Valencia, Virtus Bologna and Zalgiris.
