Monaco Basketball Faces Possible Dissolution Amid Financial Crisis

Less than a year and a half after finishing as runners-up in the 2025 EuroLeague, Monaco's basketball team is on the brink of dissolution due to severe financial difficulties. The French basketball league's governing body, LNB, has rejected Monaco's economic plan, barring the club from participating in both the first and second divisions of French basketball. Monaco was summoned for a hearing regarding its financial status but failed to provide the necessary guarantees, leading to the denial of their plan. The club has the option to appeal, with a decision expected by July 20.

The budget proposal, presented by former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn, estimated the club's budget at 10 to 12 million euros but was deemed insufficient by the committee. Monaco's financial troubles stem from the legal issues of Russian oligarch Alexey Fedorichev, suspected of massive fraud involving tens of millions of euros. His frozen accounts prevented further funding, forcing Monaco to rely on a 30 million euro bailout from the Principality to stay afloat.

Monaco is also expected to participate in the EuroCup, but this participation is now uncertain due to the ongoing financial crisis. The club must urgently intensify efforts to save itself, as noted by French sports outlet L'Equipe, which stated the decision was not unexpected given the circumstances.
