Raphinha Faces Injury, Family Rift and Transfer Rumors Amid Brazil World Cup Run
Brazil has already clinched first place in its 2026 World Cup group, but the spotlight has shifted to Barcelona star Raphinha, who is dealing with both a hamstring injury from the 3-0 win over Haiti and a storm of reports about a family and financial dispute. He is racing to recover in time for the knockout stage.
The controversy began with Brazilian media reports claiming Raphinha discovered that his father, Rafael Belloli, who previously handled his affairs, had allegedly misled him for years. The most explosive allegation says the problem started around Raphinha’s 2022 move from Leeds United to Barcelona, a transfer valued at about 49 million pounds, or 310 million Brazilian reais at the time. Reports claimed contracts gave the father 80% of the player’s image-rights and advertising income, leaving Raphinha with 20%.
The story escalated when Raphinha and his wife Natalia tried to buy a luxury house in Barcelona for 10 million euros, about 56 million reais, and learned at signing that the image-rights accounts were empty. According to the reports, Natalia then confronted the family, revealing that Raphinha was still receiving his club salary, but it was not enough for the lifestyle and property purchases they were pursuing. Natalia publicly rejected the financial-collapse rumors, saying, “if today we earned only 10% of what Raphinha earns, we would still be very blessed,” and adding that she had expected the story to fade but it had reached Spain.
Well-known Brazilian journalists, including Jorge Nicola, say there may be some truth behind the saga, but that it centers on a deep professional and family break rather than outright bankruptcy. Raphinha’s business affairs had previously been run by former star Deco, then briefly by his father after Deco became Barcelona’s sporting director. Raphinha has now shifted control to his father-in-law, Alexandre Madeira, recently a FIFA-licensed agent, which reportedly angered his father. The family tension was visible in Philadelphia during Brazil’s match against Haiti, where the two sides sat far apart in the stands. Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick considers Raphinha one of his key players, but Al-Hilal is reportedly offering him a four-year deal worth about 170 million euros.
