Russia Says It Downed 660 Ukrainian Drones in Largest Raid Yet

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down 660 Ukrainian drones between Thursday and Friday, the largest number reported since Ukraine began striking Moscow. The drones were intercepted over about 10 regions across Russia, including Moscow, as well as over annexed Crimea and above the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 47 drones heading toward the capital were intercepted. In a Telegram post, he wrote, “medics are working at the sites where the drones fell,” but he gave no report of casualties or damage.

Ukraine has intensified long-range drone attacks on Russia in recent months, focusing on energy facilities in an effort to deprive the Kremlin of a key source of income for financing its war effort. Last week, a Ukrainian strike caused a large fire at a refinery in southeastern Moscow.

Ukraine also reported fresh damage from Russian strikes. Oleksandr Ghenzha, head of the regional administration in Dnipropetrovsk in southeastern Ukraine, said infrastructure and fuel stations were damaged again, including in Nikopol and Synelnykove districts, though he did not specify how many sites were hit. Earlier, energy infrastructure in Odesa region was damaged, causing power outages in several areas and a fire, according to the Izmail district administration, while outages were also reported in Poltava region after explosions.
