Al-Taawoun unveils Zarko Lazetic, but omits Maccabi Tel Aviv from his resume
Zarko Lazetic, who coached Maccabi Tel Aviv until a few months ago and led the club to the 2024/25 championship, was officially appointed on Thursday night as the new head coach of Saudi side Al-Taawoun. The Serbian signed a contract for the 2026/27 season and will take charge starting next season, with reports placing his salary at about $2 million per year.
When Al-Taawoun introduced him, the club posted a welcome graphic summarizing Lazetic’s career record, achievements and trophies. The graphic highlighted his 2024/25 title and other honors, including the Super Cup, but did not say that those trophies were won with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The presentation listed his previous coaching stops as Partizan Belgrade, Backa Topola, Metalac and Teleoptik. It also said he was named Serbian Coach of the Year for the 2023/24 season.
Notably, Maccabi Tel Aviv was absent from the list of clubs he had coached, meaning his time in Israel was not mentioned at all in the official introduction, despite his success there.
