The horror film “Obsession” has kept breaking box-office records in Israel. Just four weeks after opening, it passed 200,000 admissions and became the most successful horror film ever released in the country. According to distributor Tulip Entertainment, it is the first horror title to reach that milestone in under four weeks.
The film has now surpassed the previous genre leaders in Israel, “It” and “Smile,” which had held the local horror record. Its rapid run has also added to the wider international buzz surrounding the movie.
Written and directed by Cary Barker, “Obsession” follows Bar, a young man in love with his best friend, Nikki. After he uses a mysterious object called the “one wish tree” to make her fall for him, the wish comes true, but quickly turns into a dangerous obsession that threatens everyone around them.
Barker first became known through YouTube shorts and the independent horror film “Milk & Serial,” which became a viral hit. “Obsession” is his first feature to receive a wide theatrical release, following its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it drew significant industry attention.
