Israel’s second annual Israeli Cinema Day, organized by the Culture and Sports Ministry, drew about 140,000 moviegoers on Wednesday, setting a new all-time record for attendance on a single cinema day in Israel. The screenings took place across the country, in all major cinema chains and in cultural halls, reaching both central Israel and the periphery.
Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar said the turnout showed that Israelis want local cultural content. “The impressive figure of about 140,000 viewers in one day is clear proof that the Israeli public loves Israeli cinema and wants to consume original Israeli culture,” he said. “We will continue to work to strengthen creators and make culture accessible to all citizens of Israel. This is a holiday for Israeli cinema and for Israeli culture as a whole.”
The five top-grossing films of the day were “Kupa Rashit - HaSרט,” “American Henna,” “Jaffa Pictures,” “Sky and Earth,” and “League of Greats.” Among them, “Kupa Rashit - HaSרט” stood out most strongly, selling about 100,000 tickets in thousands of screenings nationwide.
That made it the most-watched film during Israeli Cinema Day and the clear box office leader of the event.
