A diver was killed in Biarritz, in southwest France, after a substantial section of cliff collapsed into the sea amid the heatwave affecting Europe, local authorities said. The slide happened near the lighthouse in the town, by a busy beach area.
Officials said the collapse involved about 2,000 square meters of rock. Initial findings indicate that three divers from the area were at the foot of the cliff when the landslide struck.
Rescuers recovered the body of one of the divers. A second diver has still not been found. The third diver was not physically injured, but was described as being in severe shock.
