During an ultra-Orthodox protest convoy held over the arrest of yeshiva students, a heated verbal clash was recorded between an ultra-Orthodox woman and a secular woman over military enlistment for the Haredi community.
The argument centered on whether yeshiva students should serve in the Israel Defense Forces and on the status of Torah study. The ultra-Orthodox woman stressed the importance she attaches to Torah study and said she opposes sending her children to military service.
Her interlocutor countered that non-Haredi Israelis also study Torah and are committed to Jewish values. The two also raised claims about the connection between Torah study and Israel’s security.
The exchange broadened into a debate about shared responsibility among different parts of Israeli society, Jewish identity, and the place of Jewish tradition in public life. The convoy itself was held in protest of the detention of yeshiva students.
