A police officer from the Ramla station was sentenced on Tuesday to eight months in prison, plus a suspended term, after being convicted of assaulting his wife and causing actual bodily harm. The attack took place in their home about two and a half years ago, in front of their two young daughters.
According to the indictment filed by the Police Internal Investigations Department, the officer worked as a police prosecutor in domestic violence cases. When he came home, he saw that his wife had placed a service cabinet outside the front door after one of its legs had broken. He reacted violently while she was lying on the sofa near their daughters.
The court found that he kicked the mobile phone she was holding, pulled her hair, hit her and kicked her, causing injuries to her head and arms. In sentencing, the judge noted that the defendant never accepted responsibility for his actions at any stage of the proceedings.
The court also said he showed no sorrow, remorse or empathy toward the complainant throughout the case. The ruling ends the criminal process against the officer with a custodial sentence and suspended prison time.
