Police and Border Police near Jerusalem uncovered a tunnel dug from the Palestinian territories toward Israeli territory, about 25 meters deep, close to the al-Zaim checkpoint. The discovery led to the arrest of two suspects on suspicion of digging the tunnel and preparing terror-related activity.
According to the report, the Civil Administration first identified the tunnel in the area and alerted police from the Judea and Samaria District, along with Border Police forces deployed around Jerusalem. At the site, officers found digging tools, water bottles, gloves, face masks and additional equipment. Forensic investigators from the district then began collecting evidence.
The investigation produced forensic findings, including DNA, that led police to two suspects: a Palestinian from al-Eizariya and a resident of East Jerusalem, both in their 30s. They were arrested early Wednesday morning by the minority crimes unit of the Judea and Samaria District police, together with Border Police and Jerusalem District officers, and taken for questioning.
Police are examining whether the tunnel was dug recently and whether it was intended for security offenses, including terror attacks and the smuggling of illegal residents into Israel. Judea and Samaria District chief Cmdr. Moshe, known as Muzi, Cohen, said the case shows the district’s determination and operational and investigative ability to stop threats before they materialize, and that the force will continue using all available operational and intelligence tools against any attempt to harm Israeli civilians.
