Security forces uncovered a tunnel today, Wednesday, near the Az-Zaim crossing in Jerusalem. Investigators said the shaft reached a depth of about 25 meters, and evidence at the scene suggested sustained digging activity, including digging tools, water bottles, gloves, and face masks.
Forensic police collected material from the site and extracted DNA samples that led to the identification of two Arab men in their 30s, one from al-Eizariya and one from East Jerusalem. Following an operational raid, forces searched the suspects’ homes and arrested them for questioning.
The investigation is examining the suspicion that the tunnel was dug recently to serve as a route for serious security offenses. Security officials said it was intended for terror activity and for smuggling illegal residents into Israel, in violation of the law.
Authorities said the discovery prevented a significant security threat before it could be carried out. The case remains under investigation.
