The Gerrer Rebbe, who was on his way this morning to Medical Center in Tel Aviv for follow-up eye treatment, instructed his personal driver to join the day’s large car protest. The demonstration is meant to back detainees described by supporters as “prisoners of Torah,” and organizers say it could paralyze the country.
According to the report, the rebbe had undergone eye treatment about a month ago and then rested for a week in Herzliya. This morning he continued the treatment at the Tel Aviv hospital, while at the same time directing his driver, Rabbi Aharon Tipenbron, to take the car and participate in the protest convoy.
The instruction was interpreted in the Gerrer court as a public sign of support for Torah scholars and yeshiva students who, in the words of the report, are suffering “pain and imprisonment.” The convoy is expected to head toward Prison 10.
The article also says additional rabbis and yeshiva heads are expected to take part in the protest and express their deep anguish over what they see as harm to Torah learners. The news outlet said it would continue providing live updates from the convoy.
